Creating the perfect smoky eye to balance the neutral lip is an essential skill in any woman’s arsenal. The look complements many outfit variations and works during the day or night. Makeup artist Isabelle Thievot shows us how.

After cleansing, hydrate your skin with a good foundation. Massage it in for a healthy glow. Follow this with foundation that you will dab on with your fingers and then blend in with a large flat brush. Contour the hairline, nose, jawline and cheekbones with a darker tone of foundation or blush to add definition.

Start with a pencil in a darker shade as close to your eyelashes as possible and then smudge with a small brush. Blend onto your lower lash line. Use a palate of different shades for a modern smoky eye. Start with the lighter colour and apply it over your eyelid with a shadow brush. Then apply the soft mauve into your eye socket and sides with a blending brush.

When colouring your lips, start in the middle and then spread it to the sides for more definition and control.

make4

Finish the lip by hydrating them with a shiny lip balm. Use a small brush for control.

make5

Smile and apply a soft pink blush on the apples of your cheeks for an elegant look. Blend it with your finger or a clean fluffy brush for a natural look.

make6

Use an eyelash curler to open up your eyes then apply mascara generously on both your upper and lower lashes to give it a modern ‘Twiggy’ inspired look. Finish the look with a curling iron on big chunks of your hair. Run your fingers through the curls to give it bounce and a natural look.
