Love in the 21st Century

Everyone swoons over a good love story, even the cynics. Oh, they will protest and scoff! But at the end of it all, people want the man and the woman who seem to be a perfect fit to end up together and live happily ever after. So, when you hear about the gorgeous, Victoria’s Secret Angel taming the tattooed heartthrob who happens to be the lead singer of the infamous band Maroon 5, you’ve got the makings of a modern day fairytale. Radhika Talwar sits us down to tells us the story of how Behati Prinsloo met Adam Levine

Our tale begins with a young girl named Behati. Her father, a church Minister, and her mother, who runs a bed and breakfast, in a town named Grootfontein, in Namibia, Africa. If you ask Behati about her early years, she says, “I’m an only child and pretty much did kid stuff, gymnastics, track, riding, field hockey. I hung out on my friend’s farm a lot.” One summer, Behati was visiting her grandparents in Cape Town, when her life took an interesting turn. A man from Storm Modelling Management offered her the opportunity of a lifetime, to be a model. At first her family dismissed the idea, not considering it to be serious or genuine. However, Noelle Doukas, whose mother, Sarah discovered Kate Moss, eventually persuaded her. She spent the summer in Cape Town before she embarked on an adventure to the other side of the world first London, and eventually New York.

Her initial entry to modeling was a magazine photo shoot of her foot. Not the glamorous life she envisioned. And even though her first job may have been disappointing, Behati did not have to wait long for better offers. But life in her early days of modeling was not all peaches and cream. “I began modeling when I was 16 and living in model flats scarred me for life. There would be older girls who would bring their boyfriends home, which was strictly not allowed, and I would hear everything. Or, I’d wake up in the morning and there would be a man in his bare necessities on the couch. It was awful.”

Luckily for our pretty protagonist, her success allowed her to move quickly on, and a large fashion house, namely Victoria’s Secret, signed her on. Then, she met a boy. A rather nice, goodlooking boy, whom she liked very much and wanted to be with. Jamie Strachan, an English model with clean-cut features, kind eyes and a wicked smile, captured her teenage heart.

Now for our hero. Born in Los Angeles, to the founder of M Fredric, and an admissions counsellor, Adam Levine was the quintessential bad boy. Despite his parent’s divorce, Adam lived a childhood that was stable, fun and full of music. Crediting his musical abilities to his family, Adam was raised listening to the greats including Simon & Garfunkel, Fleetwood Mac and The Beatles. And although he grew to become a songwriter, a singer and a player of many musical instruments, Adam’s first love was the guitar. “I picked up a guitar and that was it. I fell so madly in love with it, it was all I did.”

As he grew into his ruggedly good looks, Adam realised that as much as he loved women, they loved him right back too. And even though it took till 2013 for him to earn the title of ‘Sexiest Man Alive’, there was definitive proof that the women thought he deserved that award way before he won it. As one of the hottest young stars on the music scene, it was little wonder that his fan club was so large and wide-spread. But, as the years went by, the world discovered that Adam had a rather distinctive type; tall, long-legged and extremely fit women. And while his name was linked with many a beauty, there were a few distinctive relationships among the rumours. He briefly dated tennis sensation Maria Sharapova in 2007, and had been linked with numerous models since then. His longest relationship was with Russian Sports Illustrated model, Anna Vyalitsyna, which lasted until 2012.

Now, by 2011, Behati and Jamie had parted ways just as she reached a pinnacle in her career. After having secured the position of Victoria’s Secret Angels, she had also been assigned to PINK, the brand’s casual clothing line. Less than year later, Anna ended her relationship with Adam and fractured his heart a tiny bit. The long-distance and his bad boy image played a part in the separation. Reflecting back on it, Adam muses, “The tattoos were a concern – her mom didn’t love them. They’re culturally accepted here, but it’s different in Russia.”

Shortly after, while in the process of shooting a video with Maroon 5, Adam decided to reach out to Behati and ask her to be a part of the production. This began a tentative relationship, in 21st century style, by email. And while she promptly turned down his offer, Adam was not deterred. He went the cyber route and initiated a connection that lasted a few months, before they finally met. Thinking back to that first meeting, Behati said, “When we met finally, face-to-face, he was shooting the boxing music video, One More Night, I think it was, so he had gloves on. And I walked through the door and was like, ‘What am I doing here?’ And he had his gloves on and was like, ‘This is awkward, hi!’ It was very sweet.”

And, so, began the romance that shattered the hearts and hopes of fans worldwide. No one can deny that they make a striking pair; with his rugged, edgy beauty and her golden glow. But, of course the path of true love never does run smooth, and they split briefly in 2013. Not taking kindly to the split, Adam occupied himself with Danish model, Nina Adgal, also affiliated with Victoria’s Secret and Sports Illustrated.

But a brief split is all it was as Adam found himself unable to stay away from his ladylove. They were back together within two months, and stronger than before.

Now, everyone who knew Adam was well aware of his aversion to marriage. But apparently the siren’s call was stronger than his fears, as he proposed to her shortly after they reunited. As soon he decided he wanted to get married to Behati, he went the traditional route and asked her father for permission before popping the question and doing so on both knees. “Doesn’t matter how certain you think you are. You still get down on that knee and you just get woozy and you’re like, ‘I’m doing this. Oh my God.’ And you can’t be confident about it. It’s impossible,” said Adam who found his proposal to be awkward.

Behati still maintains that the most romantic thing he had ever done for her was propose the way he did.

So, the beautiful girl found her prince after all. They got married in a lovely ceremony in Los Cabos, Mexico, in July 2014, with their closest friends and family in attendance. When teased about the fact that he went through with it, Adam sportingly says, “Famous last words: ‘I’ll never get married.’ You know, I still don’t think you have to get married, unless you meet someone that makes you want to marry them. And then you marry them and it’s wonderful.”

Now, traditionally this is where the story would end happily ever after. But since it is the 21st century, and everyone is a cynic, it should be noted that, 18 months on, the pair are still sickeningly happy. They have been seen reuniting on sets, have finally worked together on a Maroon 5 video and went back to Los Cabos to celebrate their first wedding anniversary. And so, my dear readers, this is where the story breaks, with plenty of blank pages for the happy couple to fill.
