It is the new year of fashion and your only resolution should be to step out in style in this season’s trends. And
designers across the globe have given us a good reason to look forward to Fall. Most of what was walking down the runway got us to sit up and take note of how exciting this year is going to be for fashion lovers all over. While the influence of the 70’s still lingers in the form of pussy-bow blouses and bohemian ruffles, the 80’s have crept in with padded shoulders and bomber jackets. However, there are still some elements that we need to bid farewell to. Shweta Bhatia tells us what’s a keeper and what’s not
Metallic and sequins are the name of the ame this season. Many designers channeled their disco instincts on the runway. Whether it is a shiny top, shorts or gown, stand out with this choice of garment. Keep the accessories on the low, as you don’t want to literally be a disco ball.
Whether it is a jacket, top, leggings or the side panels of your pants, the leather needs to hibernate for a while. The fabric has done its rounds for the longest time and now it needs to breathe… in your closet. Of course, as the fashion wheel spins, chances are that it will do a comeback, but, for now, it needs to not.
Although Hillary Clinton rocks this look day in and out, it is the versatility and wearability of the pantsuit that I’m most excited about this time around. Plaid is a recurring theme on the trend lists for the cooler months, but we love it in the form of the power suit. The mix and match version shows a lot of personality. To add zing to the ensemble, try it in bright solid colours. Blacks and greys? So last season.
While extra-long bell sleeves have become a favourite style, designers have further enhanced this look with a whole new range of volume. The extra puff and the ballooning around the forearms bring an arty, old-world vibe that gives it the romantic angle. But don’t overdo it. Make sure that it falls well with the proportion of your body. You don’t want to look like a court jester.
The off-the-shoulder trend is still going strong a few seasons in, and for Fall, designers refused to let the cold weather change that. Feminine yet spunky, this style is definitely here to stay for a while and we aren’t complaining.
For now, turn your back on the backless. The deep necks and the low backs have been done to death and need to be given a break.
Cascading ruffles have lent a romantic vibe to many collections of late. Having it pour down the sides of dresses and skirts enhances the look and bring just the right amount of drama.
The Wild West has called and is asking for their fringe back. While we saw numerous versions of these on jackets, pants, bags and even shoes, the trend, which was a hot favourite last season, needs to take a sabbatical.
It’s the 70’s again. The denims, jumpsuits and pants are all flaring up this season, but for all the right reasons. The runway was brimming with this famous look. The blast from the past is definitely a welcome change and looks great.
There is no better way to say this. The skinny jeans need to go. Replace the leggings and jeggings, the skinny has done its time and needs to be parted ways with.
From the World War to Madonna, the bomber jacket has re-appeared with a bang this season. Pair it with your denims or a dress, the new versions of the style in metallic, bright colours or embroidered all over is definitely a must have this fall.
Think Mad Men. The tea length is gracing the red carpets and the streets this year. The skirts, dresses, pants and even jumpsuits have shortened vertically stopping right at the calf. The length brings a certain sensuality to your overall look, giving it the right amount of edge that you are looking for.
The mini skirts and dresses look great on the petite body type and certainly grab attention. They could be the
practical choice in the scorching heat but, for this season, let the length be a homebody.
Loose cuts, flowy drapes and the Grecian feel. The bohemian look is the right style path to take. Whether your choice is wide leg pants, kaftans or dresses, you can achieve a chic style without evoking the hippie vibe. Keep
the boho ensemble simple. Too much layers can be overwhelming.
This trend is so prevalent that the list of designers that didn’t include this in their collection is shorter than those who did. The pussy bow, ribbon or the ascot tied at the neck is giving uptight blouses a new lease on life. From the soft styles to exaggerated modern renditions, you will find a bow of all sizes.
If there is one thing that has been a blessing from the fashion Gods, it most certainly has to be leggings. It is a trend that has become your best friend, as it never leaves your side, season after season. Designers worldwide are embracing the body-hugging pants in various ways. Not only are they uber comfortable, they are also slimming when styled right. A statement no woman has a problem making. This season, we saw it teamed up under dresses and they even made an entry in prints and psychedelic colours. This one is a wardrobe problem solver.
