Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you would have come across the beauty trend that calls for fuller lips. From using shot glasses to plump lips to make up tricks, there are a number of methods that women use to achieve fuller lips. Debasree Banerjee tells all
Before you hurt yourself forcing your lips into the confines of a shot-glass, let’s take you through what it entails. There have some painful versions of this technique seen on social media with girls sucking into everything from shot glasses, deodorant caps, soda bottles and just about anything else that they can ‘cup’ their lips in to use the suction created to enlarge their lips. Cupping is an ancient Chinese method to heal pain and injury, where suction is used to increase blood flow to a particular area quickly. The same technique is used to enlarge lips, which is natural and noninvasive but temporary. You just need a couple of minutes to enlarge your lips but it only lasts for one or two hours. This is a rather painless process theoretically, but if you do a quick search online for ‘lip cupping disasters’, some really disturbing images of bruised lips will appear. Sucking your lips creates a pressure, which can pull and eventually rupture blood veins in your lips. What you’re left with are bruises, which can take up to two weeks to heal and need major covering up. Bottom line: stay away from this technique.
Anyone that keeps up with the Kardashians will know that the market for lip augmentation exploded after Kylie Jenner admitted to using it to create her infamous pout. Lip augmentation is a way to plump up your lips by injecting lip fillers. Apart from Kylie Jenner, a lot of celebrities like Lady Gaga, Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Hudson, and Britney Spears have used lip augmentation to enhance their lips. The filler, usually hyaluronic acid, is injected into your lips in one setting. Lip injection costs have a price range per session, depending on how full you want your lips to be. In addition, you will need to return to the clinic at least two to three times a year to maintain your pout. This means you might have to a pretty penny for this look!
There are cosmetic lip plumpers that can help you create the illusion of a fuller looking lip. There are many topical lipplumping products like lip glosses, lipsticks, balms and scrubs that help increase the size of your lips. Soap and Glory’s Sexy Mother Pucker lip-glosses and balms work really well to dramatically increase the size of your lips without having to inject or suck into anything. Lip plumping products like these have one common ingredient called capsaicin, which is naturally found in capsicum and peppermint. Exfoliating your lips with anything that has capsaicin in it will help plump your lips too. So, scrubbing your lips with sugar mixed with cinnamon or peppermint oil will pucker up your lips immediately. These, however, have very temporary results and will not last longer than an hour. The capsaicin in them will also leave a mildly uncomfortable tingling or stinging sensation on your lips. So, if you’re up for a mildly frustrating, non-invasive, and non-committed process, then cosmetic lip plumpers are for you. Make sure you aren’t allergic to any of the ingredients before you proceed so that you don’t end up looking like a bee stung your lips.
One of the best non-invasive and least irritating ways to achieve fuller looking lips is by using makeup. By adding highlights, shadows, colour and dimension, makeup can drastically change the way your entire face looks. To look like you have Kylie Jenner-esque lips apply dots of a concealer which is one shade lighter than your foundation just outside your top lip and then blend it all in one direction along the edge of your lips. Overdraw your lip line on your upper lips to give them a fuller look and overdraw them slightly on your lower lip line as well. Use a matte lipstick to fill in your lips and then apply a shimmery eye shadow or highlighter in the middle of each lip and your cupid’s bow. Top it off with a lightly tinted lip gloss just in the middle of your lower lip. This can be a little tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s easy to do.
There are also exercises to help you pucker up. They can firm up your muscles and increase blood flow to the area that you want. One such exercise is where you smile as broadly as you can while keeping your mouth closed and your lips gently pressed together. After holding the smile for five seconds, pucker your lips as if you were about to kiss someone. Make this action as exaggerated as possible, by imagining you were trying to get the corners of your mouth to touch. Hold for another five seconds, relax, and repeat the whole exercise ten times. Doing this every single day will eventually lead to much fuller lips. You don’t need to have any makeup skills nor will you burn a hole in your pocket.
