CINDY CHAO The Art Jewel has unveiled the 2016 Black Label Masterpieces during the 28th Biennale des Antiquaires, which took place from September 10th to 18th in the Grand Palais in Paris. Cindy Chao’s eponymous high jewellery brand was founded 12 years ago, signifying her swift rise to global recognition at the highly regarded event. It also marks the first worldwide unveil of Chao’s masterful pieces to the public.
Known for its artistic interpretations as well as intricate and refined craftsmanship that brings its stunning creations to life, CINDY CHAO The Art Jewel has garnered the attention of high jewellery collectors and connoisseurs around the world. Especially incredible is the brand’s prestigious Black Label Masterpiece series which transcends the boundaries of traditional design for high jewellery. Chao seeks only the rarest gemstones to express the exceptional relationship between nature and art while creating museum-caliber pieces.
CINDY CHAO The Art Jewel exhibited twelve sets of one-of-a-kind Black Label Masterpieces, revealing this year’s new creations of the brand’s signature collections – Four Seasons, Ribbon, Rose and Annual Butterflies – in addition to classics. Each art jewel expresses Chao’s passion for organic silhouettes and layers using the toughest metals and materials in the world. She aims to turn ephemeral moments of life into timeless artworks infused with sculptural and architectural concepts. The ateliers spent years perfecting gem-setting with various materials to create sculptural art jewels that are also the lightest in the world. One medium Chao has become known for is titanium, a strong metal that is five times more time-consuming to craft than gold, but utilized because it is one of the lightest metals available.
One of the highlights unveiled at The Biennale is The Winter Leaves Necklace from the Four Seasons Collection, as a reinterpretation of the brand’s first auctioned art jewel back in 2007. A constellation of 250-carats, nearly 6,000 oval-cut diamonds, all falling within the DEF colors and VVS clarity criteria, the Winter Leaves Necklace is set entirely in titanium. As a result of more than 10,000 hours of engineering and craft, the voluminous necklace is ultra light weight (merely 78 grams, or an equivalent of four macaroons), and the curves of diamond drifted leaves flexible when being worn.
Inspired by the extravagant fashion and the birth of haute couture of La Belle Époque, nearly 1,000 diamonds of varying yellow hues were collected for the kaleidoscopic Phoenix Feather Brooch – hidden within are a chameleon diamond and a fancy-vivid orangey yellow diamond. Each colorful and mobile barb adds movement and life to this art jewel. 18cm in length and 36 grams in weight (equivalent of two macaroons), the Phoenix Feather Brooch is another titanium based art jewel that is truly feather-light.
The Bowtie brooch features a 76-carat old-mine-cut diamond as the focal point of its ruby-encrusted bow, where only special “diamond-cut” rubies are selected for their saturated hue and gleaming brilliance. The four-piece bowtie is carefully sculptured and meticulously paved to have the soft texture and silhouette of real life fabric, and at the same time they are engineered to have the “trembleuse” effect, adding to the movement of this piece of art.
The Annual Butterflies collection, a signature from Chao and now custom-ordered through 2020, will be shown together for the first time at The Biennale. The most recent Butterfly creation, spanning across year 2015 and 2016, is another highlight revealed at this prestigious event.
Over the course of her career, Chao has consistently introduced show-stopping art jewels, aesthetically rooted in the natural world yet remaining spectacularly unexpected. The new Masterpieces CINDY CHAO The Art Jewel debuts at Grand Palais are no exception.
