Being surrounded by a big family and in an environment that encouraged healthy competition, Marina Qureshi fueled her drive and love for challenges into the creation of her label that is infused with passion and is uniquely feminine. Sharon Carvalho speaks to the designer who fills her love for the beauty of natural patterns into every design she creates

How did your journey with fashion design begin?
While at school, my favourite moments were spent when I was in Arts class and as I grew older, the notion of adorning others in art that I created, grew on me. Having acquired a BA in Fashion Design and Pattern Making from ESMOD, I ventured on to Central Saint Martins to study the business aspects of fashion. After graduating, I spent a considerable amount of time under various designers, regional and international, including Alexander McQueen. I also spent some time backstage at London Fashion Week. Each experience was equally unique and informative, helping me ascertain the practicalities of fashion designing.

What inspires your collections?
Inspiration is subjective. Mine stems from the places I have visited, the people I have met, their culture, my multicultural upbringing and most importantly, my mood.

What is your design process?
I think about what has been inspiring me and create my mood boards. From there it’s a methodical process, I select the colours I want to work with, pick fabrics, create trimmings, do a draft layout of my design and then create the final sample.

SS16 is your comeback collection. Why did you take a break and what made you return?
I would not describe this season as a comeback collection because that implies I had left. I merely chose to spend time exploring personal interests and engaging in other projects while establishing my footing for ‘Marina Qureshi’ as a brand, at the same time. Now that I have a stronger creative team in London and the Middle East, I am very excited to see what lies ahead.

Who is the Marina Qureshi woman?
She is elegant, glamorous and confident. I design for the kind of woman who effortlessly holds her poise and inspires others around her.

What are your plans for the brand?
I am always considering options for expansion. For instance, I am now thinking of creating a luxury footwear collection.
